The sleeve-splitting arms

IF YOU’RE A WORK-OUT aficionado who just can’t impede doing barbell and dumb bell curls, pull-ups, and dips, then you might own the sleeve-splitting set of biceps and triceps.

Barbell curl is an exercise done by lifting a barbell of the appropriate weight from a standing position. Gripping it on both sides, putting your arms in a “curled position”, and retrieving it back repeatedly will complete the barbell curl exercise. The difference of this exercise from the dumbbell curl is that the latter uses an individual dumbbell (the smaller ones) for each arm, which may be performed alternately.

A lesson for tonight

ONE LESSON I HAVE learned in my life, as of 11:58 pm, is…

“Not all altruistic people are repaid with good rewards. Being kind doesn’t ensure you a good karma.”

Sublimation as a Defense Mechanism

AT SOME POINT OF a person’s desire for sex, comes sublimation - transforming of an unacceptable impulse, whether it be sex, anger, fear, or whatever, into a socially acceptable, even productive form, this is according to Sigmund Freud.

The Social Learning Theory

“…FROM OBSERVING OTHERS ONE forms an idea of how new behaviors are performed, and on later occasions this coded information serves as a guide for action.” – Albert Bandura

This concept was formalized by the said source in his Social Learning Theory, which states that "Learning would be exceedingly laborious, not to mention hazardous, if people had to rely solely on the effects of their own actions to inform them what to do. Fortunately, most human behavior is learned observationally through modeling” (Bandura, 1977).

A lost actor

“THERE COMES A POINT in many people's lives when they can no longer play the role they have chosen for themselves. When that happens, they are like actors finding that someone (who) has changed the play.”- Brian Moore

Suicidal week

THIS WEEK, I WILL work on my thesis in order to submit it on the 27th of February.

Certificate and new contact lenses

JUST LIKE THE OCEAN reflecting the cerulean sky, my new contact lenses from Ideal Vision are three-toned that the most dominant one among the tones, perhaps, is blue (because it’s what the label indicates).

Tumblebugs and Diablo

I’VE BEEN PLAYING A computer game almost the entire day since I got home. I tried playing Tumblebugs. I know I’m too late to learn this for now; however, it isn’t arduous to learn the rules. I, somehow, discharged my stress by playing it.

I remember the last time I’ve ever played in a computer was when I was in Grade school. I was playing Diablo back then…

Uncertainty for my absence in OSCAS Night

THERE WILL BE LIGHTS flashing a prism-like brilliance. There will be emotions beating with the tempo of the dance. Tables shall be adorned with white linens and could, perhaps, also be festooned with balloons. I’ve always loved to attend parties like this one. But tonight, in our college night, I’m certain that I can’t make it; however, I’m uncertain of the reasons….

Annoying photo shoots

I WAS ACTUALLY TARDY for my photo shoot. I didn’t know that today would be the picture-taking for TOS winners and finalists. We had it in the AVR. When I arrived, it was Gypsy’s turn. Then I left for some moments and when I returned, it was my turn after Joejit’s (the USC President).

Gypsy said, “Oy yan si Al, magaling mag-emote sa picture yan… tignan mo man yung friendster niya.”

Confessions of a TOS finalist

I NEVER PLANNED TO join the Search for The Outstanding Students of AUF. If I won, I could have been like Zhang Ziyi in Memoirs of Geisha – everything was only fortuitous and I will get the heart of the panel by my charisma. If I lost, I could have been like Gong Li in the same movie – someone dethroned despite all approbations…

I’ve been thinking about this ever since I entered TOS. And I was bamboozled… Who among these characters will I play?

Where would be the next Luzonwide press con?

I RECEIVED THE NEWS this morning that the next Luzonwide press con will be in Pagudpud, Ilocos…
This very thrilling! I’ve always sought going to Pagudpud too. Well, just like in Palawan, there are beaches in Pagudpud. Anywhere where water and Earth meet is a place for my relaxation; I consider the beach as my Nirvana.

What is a “power statement”?

A “POWER STATEMENT” IS A statement that communicates important information about you in a short amount of time. It emphasizes the value you can bring to an organization, which will cause you to leave a powerful impression. (SOURCE: A hand-out from a seminar awhile ago.)

Mostly, this kind of statement is used when you are applying for a job, or any sort of interview for an award or so. It can be stated by saying your skills, strength and accomplishments, which you want to highlight in relation to your objectives. Then you’ll be giving specific examples of that skill. State the results of that skill, and then make sure that the statement matches the needs or goals of the organization.

The moment of Truth

THIS WEEK, FORD SAID, might be the announcement of the awardees of The Outstanding Students (TOS) in AUF in diverse categories like Leadership, Journalism, Community Service, Performing Arts, Science and Technology, Christian Formation, and Loyalty. The secondly mentioned category is where I am competing in. No matter what the result will be, I’ll be ready to accept it because I never planned for this!

Tamilok, seafoods, and my self

DURING OUR FIRST NIGHT in Palawan, we ate at Kinabuch’s, which is a bistro in Puerto Princesa that serves exotic food. The best among the rest is tamilok, a kind of worm that is found in mangroves. The worst part is that they actually serve it raw!

My colleagues tried the delicacy – Pamela, April, Mitch, Tim, Genesis, Michelin and Ma’am Tina (our adviser in The Pioneer). They actually confessed that they felt as if they ingested bottles of San Miguel Light.

Mitz (Michelin) said it flavors like oyster that has a wood-like after-taste that when you burp, you feel like you’ve eaten wood over and over again. Everyone else concurred. Most of them got dizzy. Some of them wanted to vomit.

After-interview shock

THERE WAS TURBULENCE IN the plane during the flight. Perhaps, it’s because it was trapped in a sort of cumulus/nimbus cloud or so… I thought it might be a hopeless, dying scene. But then I’ve realized it’s just normal....

I already had an early flight back to Manila for my scheduled interview for TOS in AUF. During my first interview, I flunked. But this time, I suppose I’m better…

A Palawan-day wish list

TODAY, I'VE FINALIZED A list of my current wishes, which I’ve gathered in my mind the whole day...

1. I wish people who sardonically laugh in the tricycle would wobble on the back-ride and then they would fall from their seat so they will suffer a conked cranium!

The man with his three faces

THIS PHOTOGRAPH IS A symbolism of my current emotions: I’m excited, I’m nervous, and I am stressed! I am excited because I’m going to Palawan today. I’m nervous because I’ll be reciting the Code of the Campus Journalist in front of a crowd tonight at the seminar in the said place. I am stressed because of some “exhausting flight-plane-ticket reasons”.

Annoyance in conversations

OFTENTIMES, MY FOREMOST ALLERGIC reaction is when people holler at me. Some people love to correct me by defending their facts that are can even mislead us because they are more erroneous. Others are fond to instruct me with the pitch of their voice rising as if they know what they are discussing even though they know nothing.

How can shopping cause stress?

TODAY, I CAME FROM SM City Clark where I bought my Belo Set of Starwhite skin whitening products. Then, I bought swimwear at Bench, and then a castor at the SM Department Store, and then a soap case at Watson’s and then a white, long-sleeved shirt, accenting a V-line upon its neck, at folded&hung.

Memoirs of R18

CRYSTAL LIGHTS WERE HANGING from the ceiling, reflecting a prism of diamond-like brilliance. Balloons were festooned on the stage, fronting sets of chairs and tables, which were adorned with linens, for a supposed-to-be-big audience. The audience, however, wasn’t that big… It was never big. If it was, then we might have been hallucinating....

R18 was a concert organized by Cram Productions. This production team is composed of everyone in the ABMC IV class batch 08-09. It was headed by Edwin de Leon with Gypsy Salazar and Michelle Ann Frazier; all of them are my classmates.

Selective exposure and the hindrance to the Palawan trip

SOMETIMES, WHEN PEOPLE TALK, they try to make a one-sided impression....

To pursue this trip to Palawan of chosen staff in The Pioneer, I’ve had many hardships before I finalized its assurance. I’ve been scolded by the administration for omitting one of our signatories in the letter for disbursements; I’ve had dilemmas regarding the plane tickets, and oodles of other encumbrances.

However, the most arduous part is this: My Palawan days will be on February 11-14. Forlornly, my interview for TOS-AUF for Journalism (The Outstanding Student of AUF for the Category Journalism) has been scheduled on February 13. So my interview date coincides with one of these days.

What Mitch learned from us?

SHE USED TO ABHOR the Asian’s "ese-food"!

Mitch is my fellow editor in The Pioneer. She has a black American blood that makes her skin black. However, her tone isn't exactly the burnt black type; her melanin seems to have lessened diminutively if juxtaposed to pure black Americans. Her hair is also curly just like convoluted noodles. Yet she's neither fond of eating Japanese nor Chinese food. She abhors eating at restaurants, which serve food of that kind.

The yellow banana and the brown monkey

HAVE YOU SEEN A gay couple wherein one of them is dark brown while the other is yellow in skin tone? Well, I know such an uncanny-looking couple with such skin colors-combination. I often relate the yellow guy to a banana and the brown guy to a monkey.

When I see them, I call them the “monkey-banana partners”!

The deleted part in the essay

THE ITALICIZED PART IN the paragraph below was the part, which Ma’am Elvi asked me to remove because it ruins the essence and the seriousness of my essay.

Why be excellent and outstanding?

MA’AM ELVI, OUR COLLEGE Secretary and Assistant Dean, told me yesterday that my essay was well-written; that it has no grammar errors and the thoughts are coherent. (This is different from the essay yesterday.) However, she advised me to delete some parts, which ruin the quintessence of my strongly heartrending article.

The essay question is “What is the significance of excellence and being outstanding in today’s society?”

Below is my essay answer…

My "Personality Sketch" for TOS application

TODAY, I’VE MELTED WITH how Ma’am Elvi Balinas extolled the “Personality Sketch” I’ve written and submitted for TOS application. Actually, people encouraged me to apply for this although I’m not confident about my self because I’m not a connoisseur speaker when it comes to answering to interviews. (Well, this has an interview part.)

However, Ma’am Elvi’s accolade encouraged me more. She praised my article and told me that I’m really a writer. (In my term, I call it “certified writer”!)

Below is the article she praised. (It has no title actually…)

How to make Heart’s month happy

TODAY LAUNCHES THE MONTH of February. Thirteen days to go, it would be Valentine’s Day. Isn’t it anxiety-causing to think that most “normal people” (in my term, I call them “common”) would need a date during that day? Or how about the flower-giving? If you’re a woman, isn’t it dulcet to hear a delivery boy on your door telling, “Flower delivery for Ms so and so…”? If you’re a man, isn’t it laudatory if you’ll have a flower delivery too, which has been paid by a gay admirer or stalker or whatever?

Well, I suppose these things are dulcet and very flattering!

However, you should remember that you must be “attractive”. In the Philippine scenario, being attractive is being white. Conversely, getting whiter is oftentimes synonymous with costly. But this does not apply in all whitening products.

Gee, I recall that in Mai Salon – a salon nearby AUF – a papaya soap would cost Php90.00. And that’s just a soap. A classmate of mine vends it for about Php50.00 lower.

But if you’ll purchase it to me, it’s only Php38.00! Presenting…

The Beache Beauty Bar! This is a facial and body soap. It whitens the skin to a luminous complexion. It obliterates pimples and blemishes too.
